Our House and Earthquakes
New Zealand is a young country and earthquakes occur from time to time. The last big earthquake on the 23rd of February 2011 we could not feel at all here at the top of the South Island.
Early settlers learned fairly quickly the importance of using appropriate building methods in an earthquake-prone country. Our 100 year old house is mainly built in wood and locals told us, that it suffered no damage when the severe Muchison earthquake (7.8) in 1929 struck. Since new systems to produce water pressure are available these days we recently took our 1000 liter water tank off the roof. |
